He would fall victim to the drafts of the late 1960s, but Harold Schneider thought he’d get ahead of the inevitable. His parents signed his early enlistment forms when he was just 17, and he enlisted in the Navy hoping that would keep him out of Vietnam. But after photography school in Florida, Schneider’s Seabee unit shipped off to Da Nang, Vietnam for an 8 month tour. He took photos of construction work and the men involved, and also saw the grueling nature of war that remain fresh memories till this day. In late September, 2022, Schneider joined 29 other men from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam on the inaugural Honor Flight of Central Oregon tour. The experience was emotional, and his time at the Vietnam wall emotional. This is his story.
